Insulation plays a key role in many industrial processes, for both technical and economic reasons and it has an important function in increasing the energy efficiency of the plants.

Hot insulation is required to avoid heat losses in pipes, tanks and equipment in high temperature service, to allow the maintenance of the operative temperature or for personal protection reasons. Historically the most used material for this type of insulation is rock wool, but there are also other materials, such as glass wool, ceramic fiber or calcium silicate, that even if less widely used are a valid alternative. All materials comply with the latest requirements regarding health and safety and remove all risks during installation and maintenance. Cellular glass (or FOAMGLAS), have unique characteristics of resistance to fire and low temperatures, and is used in ATEX areas, where fire protection is required. A new-generation material is Pyrogel, particularly suitable for insulation in areas with very reduced space. Another material used in air conditioning systems and in buildings, is polyurethane / polyisocyanurate foam, used where no powders can be produced during installation or maintenance or where fibrous materials are not allowed.
Cold insulation is required to minimize the absorption of heat from the outside.
This type of insulation is usually more complicated than the normal hot insulation, because we have to face the additional problem of moisture penetrates inside the insulation, which affect the insulating properties of the insulation material.
For this reasons, closed cells insulation materials such as PIR / PUR / FOAMGLAS / closed cells FEF are normally used and is usually foreseen the application of one or more vapor barriers.
Riva & Mariani through its specialized technician, certified EiiF (see specific description), covers both the design of insulation based on heat loss and the preparation of detailed drawings, for each item to be insulated.

Turbines insulation requires specific skills; insulation thicknesses must be properly calculated in order to guarantee a uniform heat loss over the entire insulated surface, needed to ensure the smooth operation of the machine. Insulation must be easily and quickly installed, removed and replaced in order to accelerate and facilitate the maintenance of the turbine. For this reasons, preassembled pillows made with glas fabric and filled with mineral wool and / or ceramic fibers are commonly used.
Prefabrication and installation techniques are really challenging and it’s very important to avoid heat loss between pillows joints, which may affect the accuracy of the thermal calculations and the operation of the turbine.
